Spirit Week!

Spirit Week was back at Emma's school in preparation for state testing the following week. The kids had a great time dressing up to the creatively themed spirit days. Monday was Hawaiian day. Emma wore her Remember R3 Relay shirt (Relay is in 5 short days!), a jean skirt, lei and flower in her hair. I forgot to take a picture before she left for school, so Lora took one when the girls got home from school that day...helps to explain the frazzled hair and undone t-shirt!

Tuesday was Sports Day. Emma decided she wanted to wear her triathlon t-shirt from the triathlon she did at UOP last summer, running pants and running shoes. So cute and sporty today! I love it!

Wednesday's theme of Crazy Day is one kids always love (it's the one I always hate when I have to dress for it at my school!). She picked out all her craziness and (floral shirt inside out, pink camo pants) told me she wanted a piggy tail, braid and a bun in her hair. To top it all off, the weather wasn't that great, so she got to wear her ever so matching cherry rain boots too!

Thursday was wear your favorite color day. Can we guess the color?! PINK it was (funny because the next week she said her favorite color was red!). Good thing we have plenty of pink in our house :)

Friday was 3-peat Day. This day was created to celebrate the fact that for the last 2 years her school has scored over 900 on state testing (state goal is for all schools to make 800 and sadly, many schools do not...but mind did this year!!). The point here is that they are going for a 3-peat with testing scores and were encouraged to dress with the 3-peat theme. Because Relay was the next day, we went with a Relay t-shirt. We gave one to Sydney and Camden when I came back from Summit last year. Sydney wore hers and then Camden lent his to the girls' friend, Jenna, to wear. Our 3 Relay cuties are hoping for a 3-peat this year!

Emma, How Does Your Garden Grow?

Today while I was at my Relay meeting in Oakland, Jeff and and Emma planted more veggies in the garden. Emma was so excited to use her new gardening tools the Easter Bunny brought. The pink knee pad was perfect for keep her knees clean and scratch free!

Her "green thumb" and dirty hands planted bell peppers, cucumbers, green beans and watermelon. This was all added to the garden the tomatoes were planted in a few weeks ago. Jeff also planted my basil plant. We love to make fresh pesto! Yum!

Ta da! I'm all done! Must have taken her a while...Take a look at the shadow as she started planting and after! Gardening is hard work!

While Emma planted her garden, Allison played on the swing set. This was before she got all puffy-eyed and said her eyes weren't working!

"My Eyes Aren't Working!"

These are the the words from my poor baby girl today. I was at a Relay meeting in Oakland and Jeff was home with the girls. They went to Darrian's baseball game and Monica and Judy thought Allison's eyes were a bit puffy. Later on Allison was crying and told Jeff, "My eyes aren't working!" Jeff then called me as I was getting in the car to drive home to say that Allison's eyes were messed up. He was going to go over to Judy's for her to take a look. She thought maybe it was pink eye. When I got there I could tell my sweet baby wasn't herself. Her poor little eyes were so puffy and red and her nose was so stuffy. I headed to Raley's and picked up some Benadryl thinking it could be allergies. She's never really been affected by them before, but Jeff gets them pretty bad. After talking to a friend that phoned a pharmacist, I finally settled on a bottle (there are so many to choose from!). After a dose she seemed to look a little better, but her eyes were still red. We'll have to wait and see what morning brings...

Lemon-Aid for Relay

Emma has been so excited to have a lemonade stand again. She had one last July with her friend Sydney. They raised about $220 for Relay For Life that warm summer afternoon. She couldn't wait to do another lemonade stand after that experience. Then for Christmas, Kim got her a Relay For Life bake sale kit and a "Relay Princess" t-shirt. I can't tell you how many times I heard, "When can we have our lemonade stand, Mom?!" Finally the time had come. We set a date of April 23rd. Emma and Sydney made fliers to advertise their event. Sydney's mom, Lora, took the fliers to Staples where they donated 120 copies on pink and purple paper. Emma and Allison were so excited to go deliver their fliers to a few friends in our neighborhood.

On Friday, April 23rd Sydney was Star Student. She shared with their class about the lemonade stand that she and Emma were holding after school. Both girls mentioned they were raising money to help find a cure for cancer. After their presentation they handed a flier to all 55 kids in their class.

The kids were so sweet accepting their fliers from Emma and Sydney!

Their classmate, Aanika was their first customer at 4:00 pm! Let the selling begin!

Jeff stopped by for a glass and some red vines before heading to OSH to buy veggies to plant in the garden.

Mr. and Mrs. Quale came by for their afternoon refreshments too. Mr. Quale was a learning guide in Emma's PE class and now he is a student teacher in her classroom. Mrs. Quale is also a teacher at Emma's school.

The girls pose with Ms. KV, their PE teacher.

Amy stopped by for a quick glass of lemonade for the kids before they headed to baseball practice. She also had Allison over all day for a play date with Layla. That gave me time to help Lora get things set up for the big sale!

Papa Carl came by with Danielle.

One of the local AMS crews came by to pick up their glass of strawberry lemonade.

Mrs. Walker (one of Emma's teachers) and her husband stopped in. Emma's other teachers, Mrs. Quintana and Mrs. Magana, also came by. There were even teacher from other classes that stopped by to support the girls!

Allison even wanted to take a picture with Mrs. Walker...her potential kindergarten/1st grade teacher! Normally Allison is so shy around Emma's teachers, but today she ran right up to her for a hug!

We set up some signs on the stop signs just outside the court where we held the lemonade stand. These sweet girls saw the sign and decided to come by for a glass. How kind is that?!

Mr. Hepner, Emma's school's Facilities Director, even made an appearance!

Past and present classmates (Alaura, Emma, Daniela, Crystal, Sydney, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Ashlyn, Jessika and Tyler's older sister) stopped by for some lemonade. They stayed for a while and mingled with the group. It was quite a little gathering of all her friends from school!

I sent Emma's flier out to a few of my friends in my Moms Club. Most of them were able to stop by, including Ella and Adrienne. Allison loves to play with the twins!

When 6:00 finally rolled around the crew was beat! They had customers from their school, my school (my principal and 3 of my students stopped by!), neighbors, relatives, church members and even total strangers visit! Most of their treats were gone and nearly 20 pitchers of lemonade were emptied! What a day!

Time for the workers to sample their own refreshments!

Lora, my partner in crime, was instrumental in publicizing the girls' lemonade stand. It wouldn't have been as successful without her ideas, energy and enthusiasm. Thank you, Lora!

Time to count the earnings! First the girls sorted all the bills and coins into different piles.

Then it was time to do the math! Secret business here!

As of the first counting they raised a total of....now get this...$545.39!!! Can you believe it! The power of a couple sweet girls wanting to make a difference in the lives of those battling cancer. Can a mom get any more proud?!

Now the really cool thing is that word of their story has spread and donations are still rolling in. As of tonight they are closer to a total of $700 to donate to the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event this weekend. Truly remarkable!

Emma and Sydney are such sweet and amazing girls. I can't thank you enough for being who you are. I love you!

Camden and Allison were a big help during the sales too. They enjoyed being able to help their big sisters. They were even more excited to play with the left over balloons that night! Allison kept saying, "I dropped my balloon Mommy. Can you get it?" as it would float to the ceiling. Camden was in on her fun and games too. Those goofy kids!

Icebreaker Triathlon

I was excited to participate in my 2nd triathlon this past weekend. Jeff and the kids came along. It was nice having them at a race with me. It was the first time they've seen me run a race. Emma was the photographer and smiley Allison was just along for the adventures!

Emma did a great job of capturing the sights of the race. Here she was able to get a photo of the transition area. The sea of bikes can cause troubles if you don't remember where you parked! Good thing I counted my row before leaving.

The Icebreaker Triathlon 9 is about to begin. Now this race is called the Icebreaker for a reason. The "warm" waters of Folsom Lake can send chills up your spine. Thank goodness for my shorty wetsuit to help keep me warm! The spring time weather made for a 58 degree warm lake!
Off we go! Don't you see me swimming my 200 yards?! Now I didn't think the water was too chilly. Actually, it didn't even compare to the bone-chilling water of the Bear Valley Lake last September. That is where I participated in my first ever triathlon with my friend, Amy. Now what was I thinking to do my very first triathlon in frigid waters at 7,000 feet elevation?! We had to swim 600 yards in that water. I don't know how I made it! Then we had to ride 11 miles on our bike. There was this super crazy steep hill that we had to ride up 3 times and the run up once during the 3 mile run. Now that was an intense race! How did Amy talk me in to that one?!

Made it out of the water and now the two headless ones are Amy and me running up to the transition area to jump on our bikes. (Em, ya gotta work on that focusing!) We rode 6.5 miles on a road course that was full up ups and downs, twists and turns.

The crazy part is that we rode this course on our mountain bikes with our nubby tires. Most race participants have road bikes, but we only have mountain bikes. We had planned to do this race a few weeks ago. When that didn't work out, we switched to this race. We were not aware that the March race was an off-road mountain bike trail and this April race was a road trial. We both switched from our road tires to our mountain bike tires and didn't have time to switch back to the road tires! It all worked out, just made a bit of extra drag for us on the road. I really enjoy the bike ride the most in a race. :)

Here I come in for my finish (I am number 585 behind the girl in the white top and black pants). I'm almost at the end of the 2 mile run along the beach of Folsom Lake. So pretty!

We did it! Amy and I finished 5th and 6th, respectively, in our age division at just over 1 hour. There were 18 women in our age group. Our next goal is to make it in the top 3 and win a medal! The top female finisher in the race was a 15-year-old girl who finished in 48 minutes. Amazing!

I really enjoyed having Jeff and the kids there to cheer me on throughout the race. It was very motivating to see their smiling faces as I would run by! Thanks for all the support. Love you guys!

Time to pack it up. The girls pose by my bike before I load it up to take back home until next time...
